DANIELLE BIRRITTELLA is a California-based composer-performer whose work weaves between contemporary classical music, experimental baroque-pop, and cinematic songwriting. Her projects have been praised as “a breath of pure creative power” (Opera Wire), and her voice—both literal and artistic—is recognized for its synthesis of operatic expansiveness and emotional intimacy.
As a recording artist, Birrittella first emerged with her debut EP Tiny Ocean, released on MANIMAL Records, featuring songs produced by Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M., Atoms for Peace) and Tim Carr (Perfume Genius, HAIM, Hand Habits). PopMatters called the work “reminiscent of everything from Beach House to Slowdive to Julee Cruise,” while The Line of Best Fit described her sound as “something of a nostalgic enigma… with a penchant for impeccably balanced songwriting,” highlighting the way her classical influences—particularly Baroque and French Romantic music—are folded into modern experimental folk and pop forms. Her work sits comfortably alongside both indie and contemporary classical audiences, shaped by a background that values vocal craft, atmosphere, and emotional clarity in equal measure.
Raised on a Hindu ashram, Birrittella sang ceremonial ragas as a child before later training classically at NYU and CalArts. She performed as an opera singer throughout the U.S. and Europe, and during these travels began experimenting with songwriting, initially on a ukulele—allowing her operatic technique to merge with direct, intimate forms of expression. Her single Covered in Light was featured in NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest and used as the official song for the trailer of the film Newness. She was recently a featured artist on BMP’s 2026 Songbook release on Bright Shiny Things.
As a performer, Birrittella has been widely praised for her “high, crystalline soprano” (The Wall Street Journal), described as “mesmerizing… as hypnotic to watch as she is to hear” (Parterre Box). The New York Times has called her “exposed, intelligent, earnest… persuasive and powerful,” while The Financial Times highlights her “radiant, nearly angelic presence.” She has performed at venues and festivals including PROTOTYPE Festival, REDCAT at Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Ace Hotel, KCRW Desert Nights, SoFar Sounds.
In parallel with her recorded work, Birrittella is an established creator and performer of new interdisciplinary music. A regular collaborator with LA Opera and OPERA America, her projects bridge contemporary composition, devised performance, and film, often developed in close collaboration with poets, dancers, and visual artists. She is the creator of Sonnets to Orpheus, an immersive song cycle set to Rainer Maria Rilke’s poetry, and co-creator of Magdalene, a chamber opera set to Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Marie Howe’s work and scored by fourteen female composers. Her forthcoming project, Sentinel, explores immersive technology, altered states, and operatic performance. Birrittella is also a practicing depth psychotherapist, a perspective that informs her approach to voice, embodiment, and narrative.
